Dr Chelvin C. A. Sng is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has more than 15 years of experience in Ophthalmology. She graduated from Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge University with triple First Class Honours and Distinctions.
As the top medical student in her college, she was awarded numerous college prizes, including the Tucker's Prize for Medicine and the Charles and Iris Book Prize. As a house officer, she received the SingHealth Best House Officer Award and the Commendation Award for House Officer from the National University of Singapore Dean's Office. She was also the most outstanding candidate in her year for the Specialist Accreditation Examination, with Gold Medals conferred for being the best candidate for Glaucoma, Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Neuroophthalmology.
She received the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology (SSO) Young Ophthalmologist Award, the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS) Young Investigator Award and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award. She was also voted as one of the "Top 50 Rising Stars" and the "Top 100 Female Ophthalmologists" in the global Ophthalmology Power Lists.
As recipient of the Academic Medicine and Development Award, Dr Sng completed the prestigious glaucoma fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the largest eye hospital in Europe. During her fellowship, she was trained in the management of complex and severe glaucoma under the supervision of internationally renowned ophthalmologists, including Professor Keith Barton and Professor Sir Peng Khaw. After her fellowship, she was an Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital from 2015 to 2018.
Being the first Asian surgeon to implant several minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices (including the iStent Inject, the XEN Gel Implant, the CyPass Micro-Stent and the PRESERFLO Microshunt), Dr Sng is regarded as a pioneer of MIGS in Asia. She is regularly invited to speak at international conferences, is on several medical advisory boards and was appointed the Convenor of the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS)-MIGS Interest Group (https://apglaucomasociety.org/migs). She was awarded S$800,000 to investigate the outcomes of MIGS in Asian patients and was the first to report the outcomes of MIGS in Asian glaucoma patients. Dr Sng is the co-inventor of the Paul Glaucoma Implant, which has received CE mark clearance by the European Commission (EC) and is currently in clinical use. She is also proficient in conventional glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, Ahmed glaucoma drainage device insertion and Baerveldt glaucoma drainage device insertion) and trained in complex cataract surgery, including the scleral fixation of intraocular lenses and femtosecond laser cataract surgery.
Dr Sng is actively involved in research on glaucoma surgery and imaging, with over 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals (including Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology) and has secured more than S$2,000,000 in research funding. She is an examiner for the local medical undergraduate and residency examinations, and also chairs and organizes instruction courses at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and APAO meetings.
Dr Sng has served in less fortunate communities which have little or no access to healthcare. She volunteers with the Global Clinic (a non-profit organization) and, prior to the COVID pandemic, participated regularly in medical missions to the less accessible areas of South East Asia, India and Africa.
